Annual fee on a paid off card

June 19th, 2008 at 03:15 pm

Yeah I knew at some point this would happen. $&*(!&##!!!(#*&$^^$(!

Now that I've gotten that out of the way one of my AMEX cards (yep it's unfortunately plural) socked me with a $45 annual fee today. I of course will be paying it off asap but I thought I would just come here and say "there goes another $45 for having the privilege of a card I don't even use!" Ugh!

Tomorrow the statement closes on Card 3 and I'm excited to pay a little bit more off of it but these things are starting to add up. $45 for an annual fee, I just got a long distance bill from AT&T which was $44 (that's about $30 more than it usually is) and my wife ended up spending $189 at the hair salon (I'm not mad at that but I thought it was going to be closer to $100. She needed conditioner and some other stuff for our daughter.)

So I'm sitting on about $431 in the checking account and I figure I'll pay the stupid annual fee and the long distance bill (so 341 left.) I expect the minimum on Card 3 to be somewhere in the $400 range though. The good thing is that none of these are due until at least July 8th and I have a paycheck on the 25th and another paycheck on the 9th of July coming in addition to around $6200 in the beginning of the month so we're not sweating it. I'm just so anxious to pay them and be done with them! Smile

P.S. I will be closing this $45 annual fee card after I pay it off. What a waste!

Sometimes if you call the CC company and request that they waive the annual fee, they will. Wont hurt to ask. Good luck!

I'd call before paying to get the fee waived. Then cancel the card after you know that it has been waived. Why pay and then cancel, if it is a possibility that you don't have to pay.

Our friends at "Capital One" pulled that on me 2 years ago. Hadn't used the card, seriously, in like 5+ years and I get a bill with a $35 annual fee! @@ Yeah, right, like that is EVER going to happen!! If you have to PAY to be a cardmember, then it's not a card I need/want, ever. I don't know which is worse : them being foolish enough to charge it in the first place and/or anyone being dumb enough to pay it. There are a gazillion credit cards out there with NO FEES! Goodbye to you Capital One.

You guys are so right. I just contacted AMEX to ask them to waive the annual fee and they're going to get back to me within 24 hours. Hopefully they do waive it! I don't know why I didn't think to ask in the first place. Thanks for picking up my mental slack!

Saving that is nuts! I agree way too many no fee cards out there to be carrying something like what we had!
